Help! NIS refusing all local logins except root

Hi,

My NIS master server is a DEC 3000 Model 600 running OSF 2.0. Out of the
clear blue sky, it has decided that it will not allow any telnet sessions
into it, except from root (which is blocked under normal conditions).
Root is the only account that can login at the console, too. Also, if I
try to do a yppasswd to change someone's password, I get "unknown login:
_____" with the blank being the username of the person whose password I
was trying to change. Yet, all of the yp daemons are running, and can be
successfully stopped and restarted.

Everyone can login to any of the other systems in the NIS domain, but if I
do a "ypwhich" it shows the slave server as the NIS master. Obviously,
rlogins to the NIS master also do not work. Ypcat, etc., all seem to work
OK.

The system responds to pings, and all else seems normal. Anybody out
there got any clues. I'll post a summary.
