Netscape, java, UNIX 4.0A

Hi managers!

Has anyone out there noticed a problem with java and Netscape on Digital
UNIX 4.0A? I installed the workaround script from Digital which supplied
X11R5 shared libraries etc, so java applets seem to run OK. Now, here's
the problem I cannot seem to resolve: I'm writing an applet to display
the date - simple enough, but the only date reported is:

Sun Jan 00 00:00:00 PST 1900.

I've run the applet from Netscape 3.01 on a Macintosh, and from an IRIX6.2
host and it runs fine, which is what makes me turn to this list for help.
Even hearing a few "me too"s would convince me I'm not nuts. Thanks!
