Here is my summary for the ping patch problem I asked
about earlier..
thanks to
eisenman_at_tricity.wsu.edu for trying to help me on this situation.
I called digital CSC on this even though it is version 2.0 of
OSF/1 I'm working with. I believed since it was a mandatory upgrade,
they should help me out even though 2.0 isn't supported.
Anyway,
The CSC and I went through a few things and the end result was I
restored the / and /usr partitions from tape which fixed the
problem. The CSC tried to assure me the ping patch had nothing
to do with the system problems I'm having. A possiblity was a
file or files permissions were changed which could have
hosed the system. The only thing I can say is, I restored the / and /usr
partitions the way they were before I installed the ping patch. I
am not totally convinced the ping patch caused this, but I'm not
totally convinced the ping patch *didn't* cause this either. I'm
going to try to re-install the ping patch *AFTER* the holidays and
see what happens again. That'll give my users time to recover from this
time around and I'll have a hot swap ready next time around.

Hi,
I installed the ping patch on my OSF/1 V2.0 system, rebuilt the kernel
and rebooted the system.
Now we can not log into the system. We get "can not open /var/adm/lastlog"
Anybody know a fix for this. Need one quick. I have access to the system
in single user mode and the protections on the lastlog file look good.
I don't want to put the original files back yet and reboot on the old kernel.
thanks,
Allan
