configure problems

Hi All,

I have a very interesting problem. After setting up an Alpha 1000 with
OSF4.0b, lots of the system isn't working. If I run "setup" I only get an
"exit" option. If I try to install (gcc, sudo, Secure shell), there
"configure" scripts find the machine type "alpha-dec-osf4.0" but then it
gives me something like:

         Invalid configuration `alpha-dec-osf4.0': machine `alpha-dec-osf4.0'
         not recognized.

My assistant couldn't get CC to work so he compiled a copy of GCC on
another machine and copied it over. We also have some problems with the
startup scripts for routing and network interfaces. Neither works
properly!! The only good news is that TCL and PERL seam to work.

Does any body have any ideas of how to fix this or were to look, short of
reinstalling the entire system?

Thanks for everyone's time.
