Hi,
Altavista Directory Server is an X500 product. What you should
be looking at is LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Prococol) servers.
Hope this helps

OSF DCE comes with an implementation of X.500. DEC most likely has a
product of X.500 for OSF/1, or DEC Unix.

Robert,
We are currently using Digital's X.500 product under Digital UNIX
3.2c. I cannot recommend any good sources of information on Digital's
product because we never found any during our initial installation 8
months ago. An excellent introduction to X.500 written by Dr. Sarah
Radicati (The Radicati Group Inc.) is available in bookstores. A more
advanced X.500 book is the one by Chadwick. I have the books in my
office (I am currently off site) and I'll send the titles and ISBN codes
to you later this afternoon (I am on east coast time). If you have any
specific X.500 or Digital questions, I may be able to help.

Do you want to do this yourself or use a commercial product?
If the latter, you might want to look at PMDF-X500 from
Innosoft (

We use ISODE Consortium X.500 implementation. You should find free version
under isode-8 search. The newset version - IC-2.4 costs about 10 000 $
for commercial users. I know that Digital sells it's own implementation.

Again, Thank you
