c2 + nis + slave servers

Can c2 (enhanced security) be served by nis slave servers?
If my DU box binds to a slave server I get the error message
"Unable to update protected database".

I get the feeling that the slave server is unable to update
the fields in /var/yp/src/prpasswd which lives on the master.

How can I trouble shoot this problem.
