Thanks for all the messages - I got far too many to acknowledge (I
stopped collecting & counting at 50!!) Please accept my apologies for
not saying who sent me what - I appreciate ALL the help that I get from
this list

Pico comes bundled with the Pine mailer (which is why I couldn't find it
by searching for "Pico") and runs quite nicely on DU as a stand alone
editor. Its available from:
Pine files and documentation are available via FTP or WWW:
  ftp://ftp.cac.washington.edu/pine
  http://www.cac.washington.edu/pine

Recommendation for other editors were:
* Emacs, of course - available from any of the GNU mirrors

* Nedit (for x windows): ftp://ftp.fnal.gov/pub/nedit
* vim - Vi Improved editor: http://www.math.fu-berlin.de/~guckes/vim
* Jedhas EDT emulation http://space.mit.edu/~davis/jed.html
* THE is an Xedit clone for users with previous experience with VM/CMS)
* Joe's Own Editor by Joseph H. Allen latest version is 2.8. It is a
lot like Micro-Pro's wordStar and similar to Borland's Turbo editors.
ftp://ftp.std.com src/editors/joe*.tar.Z

I've only tried Pico, so I can't say about the rest - I'll be interested
 in any other comments about any other editor..... hmmmm maybe I should
have a crack at ed one day ;-)

Pretentious quote of the week/month (whatever):
"The nice thing about standards is that you have so many to choose from;
furthermore if you do not like any of them, you can just wait for next
year's
model." - Prof. Andrew S. Tanenbaum
