External SCSI devices on AlphaStation 500

I have several AlphaStation 500's and a (portable) external TLZ07 DAT drive.
This combination used to work, but now it is not detected after it is
connected and the workstation is powered up (">>>SHOW DEV").

The history:
1. The same drive still works on AlphaStation 200's using a 50-pin SCSI
cable (500 uses a 68-pin cable).
2. On one 500, Digital replaced the CPU board and it immediately worked,
but not for long.
3. I just tried a new SCSI cable with no change.
4. The SCSI ID is set to an unused number (5). The 500's all have a single
hard drive at 0 and a CDROM at 4.
5. Some are at DU 4.0B with firmware V3.8 and others at DU 3.2D with an
older firmware version.
6. The book says I have 1.8 m for external cable - I am using a 1.0 m
cable.
