hello

PROBLEM: trying to dump a remote filesystem (linux and DU machines) in a
tape hosted in a D.U-3.2D alpha machine, got the following
         error message:

DUMP: Date of this level 0 dump: Wed Apr 2 21:28:06 1997
DUMP: Date of last level 0 dump: the epoch
  DUMP: Dumping /dev/hda1 (/) to /dev/nrmt0a on host root_at_fis.plot.dop.pt
DUMP: mapping (Pass I) [regular files]
  DUMP: mapping (Pass II) [directories]
DUMP: estimated 23228 tape blocks on 0.60 tape(s).
DUMP: Protocol to remote tape server botched (code "Not a terminal").
rdump: Lost connection to remote host.
DUMP: Bad return code from dump: 1

the tape host machine (fis.plot.dop.pt) had the following things:

  a link from /rmt to /usr/sbin/rmt
a .rhosts with : machineA root
the priviles on .rhosts are rwx for root

  WHO ANSWERED:

  Santosh Krishnan x2815 <santosh_at_heplinux1.uta.edu>
  Becki Kain <beckers_at_josephus.furph.com>
  Irene A. Shilikhina <irene_at_alpha.iae.nsk.su>

  THEIR SUGGESTIONS:

   - check .rhosts and their permissions (Becki & Irene). put .rhosts in /
and in /home/root in the linux machine

   - because problem seems to be with "Not a terminal" it was suggested
to check the pty or tty config files

   - #dump -0uf - /usr | rsh <machine B> "dd of=/dev/tape bs=10k" (Irene),
     check commands through rsh.

STATUS: Not yet solved! Any help is always welcome.

  IDEAS: None!

Acknowledgments: I'am grateful to the persons mentioned here for their
interest and concern in helping me.
