Modem problems: Can't dial-out at more than 9600 bps

Hello,

I installed DSNLink V2.1A for Digital UNIX and I am having problems
communicating at mopre than 9600 bps with my modem. The sofware works, but
I would like to achieve a better connection.

I once had a lot of problems having a modem set up for dial-in operation
(with ppp) on the same server, but the modem runs fine now at 14400 bps.

I installed a new modem and attached it to my second serial port. I then
installed the DSNLink software and after realizing that I would not connect
at more than 9600, I made the following tests:

- Try a different phone line: Same result: 9600
- Try to call DEC's 800 number form a PC, got a 14400 bps connection
- Try to call another modem (on a PC) from the UNIX box with 'tip': I got a
2400 bps connection. Awful!

Here is how I made the 'tip' test (The modem is at /dev/tty00)

In /etc/remote I have:

modem2:dv=/dev/tty00:br=#38400:pa=none

I issued the 'tip modem2' command and then:

Connected
AT&F <= I typed this: Factory setting high speed
OK
ATDTxxxxxxx <= Try to connect at highest possible speed to remote PC
Connect 2400/V42

I really don't know what is wrong in the modem setup. I followed DEC's
guidelines for the DSNLink software. I tried Software Flow control
(recommended), hardware flow control, MNP connections only (recommended),
MNP + V42 connections, everything I can think of. I always get a 9600 bps
connection !

If I try to force the 14400 connection, I get no carrier. What is strange
is that the same modem works just fine for dial-in operation with getty at
14400 bps. (I had a lot of trouible finding the correct modem config but
after trying every imaginable configuration, It finally worked)

I remember having the same kind of problems for dial-in operation, but I
can't remember how I fixed it !

Any help would be aprreciated.
