Annoying message from Mailer-Daemon

Greetings gurus,

Details first: DU 4.0a, Alpha 1000
Misc. details: Sendmail version (came with DU 4.0a), Pop3 version
2.1.4-R4-b5a (will be upgraded this summer)

Here is my question:

We are using system aliases to facilitate large mailings on campus. Once
in awhile a users will receive a message from the Mailer-Daemon with a
subject: Returned mail: Unable to deliver mail.

The transcript of the session lists the following:

554 mapkey: result
"userID1,userID2,userID3...and on...until the end of the alias list"
too long after expansion

Does anyone know what is meant by "too long after expansion"? And, is
there a way to either suppress this message or make it more meaningful to
the recipient?
