lpd, lpc and Printserver printers

I have logged a call with Digital regarding this, but thought maybe someone on
the list might have some insight into this. We have am LPS20 printer running
the Printserver software. We are consolidating all print requests for this
printer on a single Digital UNIX system, using lpd for the queuing and spooling
process. We are seeing two problems, one if which is just annoying. The
annoying one is that the order of the jobs as reported by lpq is not the order
in which the jobs are printed. lpq prints the jobs in numeric order, but since
the job number is assigned by the system on which the print request originated
there are several ranges of job numbers. The good news is that the jobs are
being sent to the printer roughly in order of the creation date of the file.

The other problem, which is *more* than just annoying, is that we are unable to
reorder the queue using lpc topq. When lpc topq is issued, the response is
what one would expect from a successful command, but the order in which the
jobs are printed is not affected at all.

Any insight into this would be much appreciated.
