I work with an Internet Service Provider (ISP) who has about 3500 dial-up
users.
We recently upgraded to Digital Unix 4.0 and Internet Alpha Server (IAS)
software
version 3.1.1 and ran into several issues that needed to be resolved. I
think we have
resolved most of the problems, but two remain:
1) Pop mail clients that have an incorrect username or password either
respond that there is 'no new mail' or that there has been a 'network
error'. The following is a telnet session which shows what happens
when I attempt to do username password authentication via the
pop mail server.

2) The DU 4.0 upgrade required IAS 3.1.1 to be able to do locker
administration correctly with C2...which requires that the web
server be the Netscape Enterprise server. This all works fine,
but we also have user pages we have been serving on this
server (www.pionet.net/~user). The Netscape server uses a
new method of finding the location of the user pages...using
the path found in /etc/passwd (or through the system routines).
With C2 security, we receive access errors when attempting to
browse the user pages. I am assuming it has to do with C2
security.
I have pretty much exhausted the help lines at DEC. The response line told me
on both items that since it is not their software, I must go to Qualcomm
(maker
of the pop mail server) and Netscape for help. I do have calls in.
