Increasing Memory Allocation

have a DEC 3000/500 with 640 MB physical memory running DU 4.0. I am
trying to run a fortran executable file on the machine. I get the
following when trying to run it:

4827:./r2v435.exe_ev4: /sbin/loader: Fatal Error:
set_program_attributes failed to set heap start

It has come to my attention that this error is a memory allocation
problem. I did not know but apparently the operating system limits
processes to not more than 256 MB? My system has 640 MB of physical
memory on it. I heard that there is some operating system command I can
issue that will eliminate the 256 MB memory limitation? I was told that
the fortran executable only runs on systems with at least 600 MB of
memory and that is why I was getting that error. In order to get it to
run on my machine I had to change a setting dealing with the 256 MB
memory limitation. Any assistance on this subject would be greatly
appreciated.
