Dear Managers,
We have suddenly encountered a problem on a DECStation3000
running DigitalUnix 3.0.
Users who are members of a certain netgroup seem unable to
log into the machine from the xdm login prompt.
The only enlighteningly helpful error messages I have retained
are:
i) When trying to log in from XDM on the console the message
<user> - You are not authorised to use this machine
ii) The xdm-error file complains about DECnet sockets and not
being able to create them, and proclaims that the server
terminated abruptly.
Interestingly I as an admin can log into the machine on the console using
xdm. I as a member of another netgroup can log into the machine on the
console using xdm. When I stop xdm, the members of this netgroup can
log onto the console, and they can log in remotely.
Therefore I suspect: The problem is something to do with X-Authorisation
in Xdm. NIS et al probably work ok otherwise the console and remote logins
wouldn't work ok.
The user we tested things with did have a .Xauthority file with
magic cookies for that particular display.
Any help would be muchly appreciated.
Regards,
Balint
