Dear Managers,
Sorry to have troubled you with this, I managed to solve it after
a while jon my own. In case similar things happen to you
you may find the description of the solution helpful:
The problem was:
A netgroup of users couldn't log into the Alpha
(running DU3.0) via xdm -- however they could log in
via telnet/rlogin/on console/etc as long as it was not
via xdm.
The error message that flashed up in the console window
when they tried to log in was:
<username> -- you are not authorised to log into this machine.
The solution was:
----------------
a) the Xsession file had /usr/lib/X11/xdm/Xsession
deliberately checked that the group of the user
didn't contain a string, ie it tried to check that
only the members of the right group could log in.
b) If your group was considered to be wrong,
you got thrown off (ie dxsession wouldn't run)
and Xdec will terminate as it is spawned with the
-terminate flag.
I removed this checking. It used the local groups on the
machine only.
The remaining loose ends:
-------------------------
Who did this to the Xsession file? I was informed that it
was a site customisation of the previous owner. But then how come
the machine was working fine on this site now for 2 years?
Once again, sorry to have troubled you all,
Balint
