I'd like to thank the following people who responded to my query about
error messages being spewed forth by my TZ87:
Dr. Tom Blinn <tpb_at_zk3.dec.com>
Martin.Blomdahl_at_network.combitech.se
alan_at_nabeth.cxo.dec.com
Kurt Carlson <sxkac_at_java.sois.alaska.edu>
I compared the times of the errors and our tape rotation logs, and there
was no correlation between the time & the tape involved. Using the cleaning
tape did not help, either. However, since the beginning of this week, I've
noticed a dramatic increase in the frequency of these errors, and opened a
support request this afternoon. I'm waiting to hear back from the local DEC
office to arrange a time to replace the drive.

Here was my original question (minus uerf sample):
Good day everyone, I'm having somewhat of a problem discovering the cause
of some error messages I'm seeing in our output from uerf.
The system in question is an AlphaServer 2100 4/200 running Digital Unix
3.0B, and the TZ87 is attached to the 2100's onboard SCSI, along with a
TLZ06, and an RRD43.
On what appears to be a weekly basis, I'm seeing a number of error messages
from the TZ87. The uerf output claims that they are all recoverable errors,
but I tend to be suspicious about any errors that I see in this file.
Before I include a sample from uerf, I will say that I have checked all my
cron jobs, and although the errors are occurring during a backup to the
TZ87, the same job runs without error to the same drive for the other 6
nights a week. (-:
