My problem turned out to be one of my relative newness to DEC Unix (coming
from a UNICOS/Solaris background). I figured this one out on my own,
finally.

In DEC Unix, root's "home" directory is /root , not /. Thus the .rhosts
goes in /root/.rhosts , not /.rhosts

All of y'all server as a great think tank for information!!!
