SUMMARY: Problems with a 4mm tapedrive

I forgot to tell you the tape was read without errors on another drive and
that no file system like /tmp was full.
I will send the drive to service.

I think Paul Grant is correct by answering:

I had a similar problem with an old 8mm tape drive. If I remember
correctly the head was knocked out of alignment and we could read and
write new tapes. We could not read any of the old tapes...

It sounds like a job for super engineer..

Can you try the old tapes in another 4mm drive as this would confirm the
  above.....

My original question was:
I have trouble reading old tapes from my 4mm WangDAT3200 (2 Gb) tapedrive,
while I succeed in overwriting/reading with the same drive.

Thanks also to Knut.Hellebo_at_nho.hydro.com and

question!
