compile a new kernel

OSF Managers,

I am installing Digital Unix 4.0B with firmware update 3.8 on a new AlphaServer
4000. Installation of OS apparently is successful but I have a problem in
generating a new kernel with the following error:

"ld: ace_regbase not defined"

The only change I made on the configuration file is to increase
the kernel parameter value of maxusers.
