Gdbm on Digital Unix

Does anyone have gdbm running on Digital Unix (4.0b, specifically)? I
have
written some code on Linux (Intel) using gdbm that I would like to run on
Digital Unix. When I compile the code (gdbm is installed--seemingly
without
problems), I get:

ld:
Unresolved:
gdbm_open
gdbm_close
gdbm_store

As mentioned above, gdbm seemed to install fine (with a tweak or two) and
running strings on the library shows all three of the unresolved symbols.

I know that I could use ndbm, but preliminary results with my code aren't
promising--it runs an order of magnitude (maybe two) slower and produces
files that are at least 10 (more like 100) times as large.

As an aside, maybe this is why mkpasswd runs so slowly on our machine
(16,000+ acounts)...

Thanks,
