I have 11 Alpha servers to maintain. 1-4100, 8-2100's, 2-3000s. I have a recurring problem that seem to affect all the alphas from time to time. That is SCSI-CAM errors that inadvertently hang the system - (I believe while timing out or resetting the bus - which can last for an hour or more).
Most of the systems have at least 1 BA350/353 cabinet with at least 4 drives installed plus an external tape drive. They are running between DU3.2C to DU4.0. On some machines where these SCSI CAM problems have become excessive - SCSI cable lenghts have been shortened, cabinets replaced, disks replaced, mother boards replaced - still the SCSI-CAM problems keep re-appearing.
I am wondering if there is some software configuration that needs to be performed. Also, I have been advised to put the external tape drives on separate controllers - is this the normal configuration option for most people with external tape drives on their Alphas?
Any ideas are welcome.
Thank You
Susan
