This is a slightly unusual question...
I've been reading the Digital UNIX 4.0B HTML documentation in Netscape
recently, and have a problem with the navigation icons. It is NOT a functional
problem but a visual one; I find that when I am reading text with the icons in
my peripheral vision, I get a very distracting shimmering effect. I am not
entirely sure what causes it, but I suspect that the diagonal shading patterns
of the icons cause interference patterns with their own afterimage as the eye
scans across the line.
I'm wondering whether anybody else suffers from this, and in particular
whether anybody has designed any alternative icons which would avoid it. I
load the documentation CD onto hard disc, so there would be no technical
difficulty in replacing the icons.
If not, I might have a go at removing the shading myself and see what happens.
