lpr queues hang from time to time

I have a problem which has been going on for some time now.

After my printing system has been operating with no problem
for a while lpq starts to hang and I get the following error
message when I submit a job:

#lpr -P6 boxes.eps
lpr: connect: No such file or directory
jobs queued, but cannot start daemon.

And I get the following message when I try to use lpc to start the
queue:

# lpc start 6
6:
printing enabled
lpc: connect: No such file or directory
couldn't start daemon

If I reboot the queue is fine again.

Does anyone know whats up. Or even what file or directory it is
looking for when the error message says: lpc: connect: No such file
or directory.

Any help would be much appreciated.
