Dilemma on gateway/default route terminology

We're going from a subnetted to switched network this summer and I have a
question on the networking changes for our DU boxes (for that matter, any
unix box) At this point, we're fully subnetted. For a given host, say
x.x.10.20, they're on subnet 20 and their default route (my term) is the
interface on our router. in our environment, all of the "gateways" (my
networking folks term) is x.x.b.10, where b is the subnet. so in with the
above machine, x.x.10.10 is the "gateway" or "default route."

Now, enter switching. My network folks tell me that the gateway, once we
move to a switched set up will be the same as the ip address of the
machine. This sounds odd. I always thought I needed that first hop
unless the unix box in question wanted to do it's own routing. I _DON'T_
want to do that.

Any one have any insight/experience/know-what-I'm-talking-about on this?

Jim
