connection reset by peer problem

Hi all,
I'm having a problem when I try to rsh between some nodes on my network.

I either get prompted for a password- and then when I do type my
password in,
it's consistently labeled incorrect, OR I get a "connection reset by
peer" message and get returned to my prompt.

The machine I am rsh- ing to is an Alpha 255/300 running DU 3.2g.
I can consistently rsh successfully from a decstation running ULTRIX
that happens to
be my YP (NIS) server. All the /etc/hosts and /etc/host.equiv and
/.rhosts look fine.
In fact, I haven't had this problem in the past (i.e. the rsh's worked
before).

I looked in the archives and found references to the connection reset by
peer messages but no solution. Someone did mention "a problem" with
Networker not resetting the connection between a DU box and a PC. The
Alpha 255/300 that I'm trying to rsh to is my Networker server backup
host.
Any suggestions would be greatfully appreciated!
