Original problem was:

Thanks to all for input. Dr. Tom Blinn had an excellent suggestion about
troubleshooting. Also received advice from david_at_pointetech.com that it is
important to be up-to-date on the ENF level (which we are) and from Richard
Jackson saying his site has had a lot of Unicenter problems and feels it is
not a mature product and noting Unicenter did not do real well in ratings in
Computerworld April 27 survey.
The exact answer was eventually supplied by CA Level 2 (but I had been
dealing with CA for a week before I posted, so was not a speedy resolution
of what turned out to be a known problem): said it was basically an OSF
memory problem that would be resolved by patch OSF375-350248 (which is patch
110.0 in the DU patch kit we downloaded). We applied the patch last night
and now we can bring down Unicenter smoothly. Thank goodness!
