Script for Alpha archival of files to go to an EDM system

I am looking for a script or software that will interactively prompt a user
for a series of files that the script or software will compress into a
single compressed tar file that can then be moved into an EDM system for
archival storage and retrieval. Any assistance will be appreciated. Thank
you.
