ATM card as ONLY interface?

Has anyone set up a Digital UNIX machine (4.0b in my case) to have an
ATM card as its ONLY interface?

I can't seem to get it to work. The ATM interface comes up; the ELAN
is successfully created and in sync with the switch (atmelan show shows
a state of S_OPERATIONAL), but I can't ping anything outside the local
interface.

I turn on the ethernet interface (ln0; this is a DEC3000/400 although a
3000/800 and a 1000 5/333 will be configured the same eventually), and
it works. Nothing's plugged IN to the interface, mind you, but just
the fact that it's up does it.

I suspect it has something to do with /sbin/init.d/inet, although I
configured the rc.config file to have a netdev of elan0 with dummy
parameters (nothing, actually), and put the atm startup before the inet
script. That didn't work...

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'd like to make all three
mentioned Alphas ATM only.

(I do have the v4 Jumbo Patch installed too; the switch is a CELLplex
7000)

Mike
