learning to write scripts

Hi,

My job is going to start including writing scripts. I have the
opportunity to take some courses for this. Would it be
best to first learn KornShell programming, and then Perl
or some other programming language (perhaps C)?

Or, would it be best to just step into Perl or some other programming
language?

I will need to start writing scripts on DU, IRIX and HP-UX.

I am aware of the PERL and KornShell books out there
which I will be purchasing (and maybe C). Any guidance would be
appreciated.
