Original posting:
I just installed du 4.0B on one of our older 3000/M700's. When
the system comes up, the hour glass sits there and you see occasional
flickers. When I boot into single user I see a core dump from dtlogin,
but /var/dt/Xerrors says that Xsetup core dumped. A dbx on dtlogin/core
shows that the error has to do with strcmp in on the authentication
procedures beneath getpwnam, but that doesn't mean much too me. I
installed the exact same thing on a newer M700 without incident. The
only thing that is different is the graphics card (PMAGD-AA in the one
that dtlogin loops on and PMAGB-B in the one that works). Does anyone
have any clues?
Suggestions:
1) Swap out graphics and disks "process of elimination"-style.
2) Make sure the graphics card is supported.

Solution:
The disk turned out to be bad. I have not had this problem
with any other systems.
Thanks again for the replies!
