xterms, PC-Xware, Alpha 250 4/266, Arc/Info... don't work together

Hello gurus.
I've tried PC-Xware technical support (their answer is attached below), but
couldn't figure this one out, so I thought I would try this list of experts,
since this problem relates to my DEC Alphastation 250 4/266 also (which runs
DU 4.0b).

I am trying to connect from my Windows NT 4.0 Pentium Pro to my DEC Alpha
(named hopland) using PC-Xware 5.0 Classic. Everything seems to go okay
when I connect using XDM (as opposed to telnet), and the CDE comes up.
However, when I try to run a program called Arc/Info, I get the message
"FATAL ERROR, Segment Violation." The line in the .arc configuration file
that seems to cause this is:
&term 9999 (this line tells Arc/Info that it will be using xterms as the
data display windows)

If I add the following line to my .cshrc file:
setenv DISPLAY hopland:0
then Arc/Info will at least start, but I get the following messages when the
.arc file tries to set the terminal type:
Xlib: connection to "hopland:0.0" refused by server
Xlib: Client is not authorized to connect to Server
Cannot open channel to XSERVER (hopland:0)

Does anyone have any suggestions to clear up this problem? Is there a way
to tell my server that I really do want to set my terminal type to 9999
(xterms) and use them in Arc/Info? Does any of the above mean anything to a
guru out there?

Hoping you can help (ESRI, makers of Arc/Info, are next on my list...),

NCD PC-Xware's comments:
"Colin,
The main reason I can think of why Arc/Info is not running under the CDE
environment are:
In the telnet connection your Alphastation see the terminal type as a vt320
character based terminal emmulator. From within the CDE environment the
terminal type is xterm or dtterm (graphics based terminal emmulator). The
DISPLAY variable is implied when doing an xdm connection, where you need to
set the DISPLAY using a telnet. My suspissions are that you set the Arc/Info
configuration to recognise the terminal type which CDE is using (do a echo
$TERMINAL). I do not have Arc/Info here so I do not know the correct syntax to
use within the configuration script."

If you've read this far, thank you!
Colin
