I wrote with a food-for-thought question not related directly to DEC UNIX: can
printing be enabled across a dialup SLIP/PPP connection to an ethernet printer
on the remote LAN? With no permanent IP addresses available for the remote
printers, it seems an ugly proposition. I hoped for some thoughts on the issue,
as opposed to actual DEC UNIX commands and examples, since the solution is
intended for a non-DEC implementation.
I received some thoughtful answers as well as a couple of admonitions that my
question was out of place on this list. I apologize for going beyond the bounds
of this highly professional list. Evidently what I took to be an intriguing
general UNIX problem of interest to this community may be better posed
elsewhere.
My thanks to these generous individuals who shared their ideas:

Suggestions included using Samba (smbprint) and configuring the remote host as
a router. Hans Ullitz-Moeller offered an excellent illustration of how this can
work seamlessly, provided that the remote destination has a router (in fact,
for our purposes the remote clients will have neither routers nor machines
configurable as gateways).
Thank you again to those who replied, and my apologies to those who may have
taken umbrage at my presumptiveness.
