How to compile netpbm on Decunix?

When I run "make" on the netpbm-1mar94.p1 distribution using their default
Makefile, the compilation bombs before reaching the end. Has anyone successfully
compiled netpbm for Dec Alpha Unix? If so, how? Sorry if this is a bunny
question.
