.nfsXXX files in user directories

We have noticed that .nfsXXX (XXX = some hexidecimal #) are being
created in some user directories. We are curious as to why these files
remain after the user has logged off. I would think these files would
have information about the NFS transactions going across the network.
But I would also think that these files would reduce their size or
disappear once the data has been acknowledged as having been
successfully transferred.

What is soo alarming is that some of these files have reached 350MB!!
Does anyone know why these files are being left out there and if there
is a configuration step to have them automatically removed. I can run a
fund & remove cron job but these files shouldn't be sticking around
anyway!
