I just upgraded a DEC 3000/400 which has several external 9 GB Seagate
narrow SCSI disks to a Digital Personal Workstation 500au. I purchased
a KZPAA fast SCSI (narrow) adapter card for the PWS500au. The disks
are now behaving differently than when they were connected to the DEC 3000/400.
Specifically, it appears that the disks are now spinning down after some
period of inactivity. When the disk is again accessed (either locally
on the PWS500au) or via NFS (this machine is NFS serving these disks to
a local group), there is a pause of perhaps 10 seconds while the disk
in question spins back up and is again available. I can hear the disk
audibly spinning up and see the SCSI activity light is illuminated while
this is happening.
Is this behavior normal? I'm concerned that my SCSI cables may be too
long and have just ordered a shorter SCSI-2 cable for the disk enclosure
to connect to the workstation. I've noticed an occasional error in
the error log file regarding "SCSI timing reset", but this usually
does not happen everytime the disks spin back up.
Thanks, in advance, for any assistance.
