Dear sirs
I am a system administrator of a Digital informatics system, comprising
two 2100A 5/250 Alpha servers running DU4.0B (no patches applied) and
PathWorks 6.1 server, serving about 150 Windows 95 clients (pan european
version).
My problem is that I use the Advanced file system for my disks, and for
some obscure reasons, the systems crash (advfs panic) quite often. Here
are some hints:
-I use a HSZ40B for storing data (4 groups of 3*4GB rz29b-vw RAID5). The
system files (root, usr swap) are located on internal (advfs) RAID5 SCSI
controller with 3*2GB rz28-va
-though I use advfs for root and usr, they had "never" crashed
-the crash is located on the shares made through PW (on the root and usr
file systems there are no shares or directories with user write access
via windows 95)
-the crash could be reproduced on the usr partition in the following
conditions:
-a certain tape (with data archived some time ago from the same
machine) could not be downloaded to a shared directory (advfs panic,
even in single user mode)
-the same tape also crashed the system when unarchived to the usr
(advfs) file system
-the same tape had no problems when downloaded to a ufs file system
temporary created
-the advfs where created with the commands: mkfdmn -t advfs -x 512 -p
14400 "name" "device"
-the crash is preceded by some error messages revealed by the verify
command
-for some reasons it seems that a direct creation (write) to a shared
directory of a file using a filename comprising some romanian (special)
characters is sometimes a cause of a crash, but this is not a rule !!! I
am daily running a script that calls the acladm program.
As an attachment you can find some archived files you may find useful
for debugging (some logs, disklabel outputs, fstab, ...)
If there is someone having had the same problems, and knows by now how
to solve them, please help me!
