Win95 and Slip/PPP - no modem

Hi,

Is it possible to connect Win95 to DU using slip or ppp and a serial
cable (no modem).

i.e. Can Win95's "Direct Cable Connection" be persuaded to talk TCP/IP
  or Can dial-up networking be configured not to use any modem :-)
  or is there another way?

If I know it's possible, then I'll try harder :-)
