Hi. A quick question: I had an AlphaStation 255/300 hang recently
such that the reset button did not work and I had to power cycle it.
The keyboard LEDs flashed periodically (all three of them, in a <long
pause> <flash> <short pause> <flash> pattern), and there were no other
signs of life. The pointer did not move in response to moving the
mouse.
The "crash_data.0" file created when the machine rebooted contained
the following strings:
_panic_string: 0xfffffc0000511f90 = "Machine check - Hardware error"
and, in "buf", "Alpha PC machine check type 0x660.\n".
So I'm wondering if anybody can tell me what `machine check type 0x660'
means.
I've seen identical behaviour (although I'm not sure the machine check
type number was the same) on other identical AS 255/300's occasionally
in the past (with no real pattern I can detect). The problem is sporadic
enough that I don't feel like I can call for hardware support unless
I'm 100% sure it's a hardware problem (which I don't think it is since
I've seen it on more than one machine).
The machines are running DU 4.0A (Rev. 464).
Thanks.
