Bingo! Many thanks to Paul A Sand <pas_at_unh.edu>, who pointed me toward
ftp://ftp.service.digital.com/public/dunix/v4.0c ... There are several
patches there, including one for this particular problem (it's bundled
in with a huge number of others, in a 22 MByte (!!) patch kit). I've
not yet had a chance to try the patch, but it's probably a safe guess
to assume that it works.
