I haven't finished it yet, but it looks like my final stumbling block
may be a problem with the device itself. So far I've discovered the
following:
o Pinnacle doesn't support the Digital Unix platform (only
Solaris/SunOS/Irix)
o However, Tracer Technologies (www.tracertech.com) has a multiplatform
driver ('Magna', or GD) which supports this device, along with dozens
others, including jukes and loaders, MO, WORM, CD-R, etc. The generic
minimal config is $500 retail, but it has optimized settings for
particular models, including Pinnacle Apex. It also installs as a setld
package, which is neat.
o Tracer also provides Unix versions of firmware patch updater software
for various Unix flavors. I think this is Pinnacle's official Unix
update process.
o Tracer's pre-sale support is excellent!
They think (and I agree) that the problem may be with the media we got
with the drive, and I'm going to see if we can get some different
media.. The drive returns 'Unknown Media' when the cartridge is
inserted and the Tracer folks say that valid media should return a more
verbose descriptor (such as '4.6GB 1024b/sector' or whatnot).
I'll post the summary when this is _complete_, with a step-by-step
install guide.. I'm already uncomfortably familiar with this problem,
but at least it's a great way to learn SCU! ;)
Thanks,
-Matt
