When a user tries to change his password on our machine
running Digital Unix 4.0A, he gets a message saying he
needs to run mkpasswd:
% passwd
Changing password for opie
Old password:
New password:
Retype new password:
Hashed passwd database does not match the /etc/passwd file. Rerun 'mkpasswd /etc/passwd'.
%
But you need to be root to run mkpasswd. So how do
ordinary users change their passwords in this situation?
(Actually, for some reason it just works for me as myself -
I don't get a message saying to run mkpasswd and my password
is changed -- I belong to the same groups as another user who
is getting this message, so I don't know what the difference is.)
