Video console in text mode: which terminal emulation?

Dear Gurus,

I've set up a DU box running 4.0B to not start X and just sit at the
text-mode login prompt.

When I log in, the terminal emulation is screwed up: TERM is set to
vt100, but ctrl characters are displayed directly. It looks like the
escape character is just ignored. I've tried setting TERM to vt52 and
ansi (no difference) and console (unknown).

I couldn't see anything more appropriate in /etc/termcap so I'm asking
the gurus :-)

Other question: which /sbin/rc*.d/* should I modify to keep the original
font of the graphics card and not switch to a fine, 1 pixel thick font
that is unreadable on a small, low bandwidth screen. I grepped
/sbin/rc*.d/* for video, font, tga, screen, ... without success.

Thanks in advance

Andre
