alan_at_nabeth.cxo.dec.com correctly pinpointed that a disk which shows
it is there, but doesn't show ready on _tur_, or respond to the _start_
command, is most likely to be getting enough power from the SCSI bus
to say "hi, I'm here", but *not* enough to spin up.
Pavel also pointed out that if the disk doesn't work properly
with the scu utility or with the "file" program when you boot from
genvmunix, (which it didn't in my case) then no amount of kernel rebuilds
will fix the problem.
I put the disk onto the internal bus rather than in the old spare
disk enclosure that I'd had it in on the external bus, and it is now
working fine. Likely culprit...bad power supply in the enclosure.
