SUMMARY: printing to DU 4.0b server

Hi all,

well I've managed to get things working, although it's
        hardly a logical solution!

        Thanks for replies from:

        Knut Hellebo <Knut.Hellebo_at_nho.hydro.com>
        Rainer Wolf <rainer.wolf_at_rz.uni-ulm.de>
        Donald Bovee <bovee_at_amath.washington.edu>

Rainer and Donald both seem to have experienced the same
        problem.

Rainer's solution was to remove all entries from
/etc/hosts.equiv on the server and make sure all
client machines are listed explicitly in /etc/hosts.lpd.
        Previously we had +_at_<unix netgroup> in hosts.equiv
as well as all the clients listed in hosts.lpd.
(All this worked fine before the 4.0b upgrade)
Surprisingly, after removing the netgroup line from
hosts.equiv and restarting lpd, printing from clients
works fine. Although I am at a loss to explain why.

After getting that working, another problem was noticed
where if multiple files where sent in the same print
job (eg lpr *.ps) or in very quick succession (eg printing
from PC's via samba which spits out a 3 byte header file and
then the real file), then the first file would print ok
but the next files would all default to US letter size
paper, which is very annoying as here in Australia we
use ISO A4 size paper. Hence the printer would stall
and say Load letter Tray 1 etc etc.

After much hair tearing, I found that if I replaced the
lpd in 4.0b with lpd from 3.2d on the server, that problem
        went away.

We logged a service call with DEC about the original problem
and it has been "escalated to engineering" so if we
get anything back I will post again.

I would really like to know what DEC did to the printing
system between 3.2d and 4.0b because it has taken me
longer to get the printers working again than it took
        to do the entire upgrade.

Cheers.

Karim.
