Query: Bypassing login

We'd like to configure a DEC Alpha (running DEC Unix 3.2g) to boot up and to
go directly on to running an application *without* going through login. A
dedicated machine so to speak. The application needs both mouse and keys.

I tried to do it by reconfiguring xdm but there seemed no way to get rid of
the login prompt. The only way I could find to do it was to remove the link
/sbin/rc3.d/S95xdm - stopping xdm from kicking off at boot time. Then I set
up a new script (activated with a new link in rc3.d) which ran X. We were
then able to throw our applications onto that screen remotely from other
servers on the network. Seemed to work OK.

Does anyone know of a gentler way to do this ? It would be nice if xdm could
be configured to do it.
