What I was hoping to do was merge the local auto.home and the
NIS auto.home with the local file overriding the NIS map.
Thanks to James Sainsbury, Kristin (Kris) Larsen and Richard Renshaw
who steered me in the right direction. Both James and Richard
pointed out that you can put '+auto.home' at the end of the local
/etc/auto.home to append the NIS map.
I'd already tried this and it didn't work. The solution was to
specify the full path name for the local map in /etc/auto.master
as:
/home /etc/auto.home
and then stop and restart the automount daemon.
Now everything works exactly as I hoped it would.
