Kernel rebuild failed. Don't understand error message.

I recently attempted to rebuild my kernel using the same configuration as
for the existing kernel (or so I think). However, during the build I
received an error that I find difficult to interpret. The last few lines
of the session are reproduced below.

-----> BEGIN QUOTE <-----

Press <RETURN> to continue:
-----> END QUOTE <-----

I went ahead and pressed return to get this:

-----> BEGIN QUOTE <-----
*** NOTE ***
The customized kernel for this machine could not be successfully
created. One possible problem could be kernel layered products
that might be incompatible with the base operating system. This
script will now automatically attempt to build a kernel using the
base operating system only.
Is this ok? (y/n) [y]:
-----> END QUOTE <-----

I said "sure" and doconfig attempted to rebuild the kernel again. It
failed again with a message identical to the one above except this time
it just told me that it couldn't build a kernel for my machine with that
configuration. It asked me if I wanted to edit the configuration file
and I said "no."

As I said, I thought this configuration was identical to the one I'm
currently running (meaning: I didn't make any changes). So I'm not sure
what the problem could be.

Two additional things:

1. Although identical to my current configuration, this configuration did
have a different name. I find it hard to believe that would have anything
to do with it, but I thought I'd mention it.

2. I had installed, at an earlier time, the Internet AlphaServer package.
I decided afterwards that I didn't like it. However, I wasn't sure exactly
how to remove it, so I did so "manually." Okay, okay... so that was a bad
idea. Now I'm wondering if that has something to do with this situation.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
