First, thanks to everyone who helped me and to those who are doing it right
now.

Looks like CDE does not permit root login with X on anything else than the
system console. It used to work with DecWindows though...

Anyway. Here is the original question, followed by the answers/suggestions
that I received:

Orig:

We are running Digital Unix 4.0B on an alphaserver 1000. We are running
CDE. Whenever I try to log in as root from an X workstation (or more
specifically a PC running Exceed) I get the message "root login refused on
this terminal"

I added the IP address of my PC in the /etc/securettys and even rebooted
the server to make sure that the config file was read, but the problem
persists.

Any Idea ? (We are NOT running C2 security)

Answers:

The security authorization will not allow a login as root!
Create a privledged account that is a member of the system group.
Login to the privledged account.
su to root and give it the password when asked.
You'll be root, and will have gotten in remotely.

I would recommend simply logging in as a normal user account (say your own
on that box) and using "su" to become root, rather than logging in as root
directly.

You can login as root via CDE on the console only. I don't know of a way
to accomplish this via remote X terminals using /etc/securettys.
