For some strange reason it started working this morning, after I deleted 
the line in /etc/securettys and recreated it. Maybe there was some 
"invisible" control character in the file or something like that. One thing 
is sure, I did not misspelled the IP adress of the PC, nor did I forget to 
put the :0 after it.
Most people also told me that you need the 'ptys' keyword in the securettys 
file in order to be able to log in as root from the network. But that was 
already done in my file.
Also note that for security reasons, one should not permit root login 
directly from the network. In our case, we are not paranoid and we are not 
connected directly to the internet, so we can live with it. Anyway, most 
users are so dumb we could give them root acces and they could not even 
crash the system on purpose.
