SUMM3: Cannot login as root from X workstation

Please see my previous summaries on that subject.

For some strange reason it started working this morning, after I deleted
the line in /etc/securettys and recreated it. Maybe there was some
"invisible" control character in the file or something like that. One thing
is sure, I did not misspelled the IP adress of the PC, nor did I forget to
put the :0 after it.

Most people also told me that you need the 'ptys' keyword in the securettys
file in order to be able to log in as root from the network. But that was
already done in my file.

Also note that for security reasons, one should not permit root login
directly from the network. In our case, we are not paranoid and we are not
connected directly to the internet, so we can live with it. Anyway, most
users are so dumb we could give them root acces and they could not even
crash the system on purpose.

Hope this helps
